UK vs. USA. Class? We got it.

Last night was a evening of glitz and glamour on both sides of the Atlantic, with the USA holding the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, and here in the UK, the 64th annual BAFTA awards. Husband and I watched he BAFTAS and it was a night largely dominated by The King’s Speech, The Black Swan, The Social Network and Inception (though we were super happy to see True Grit get an award). One thing that we noticed was, many of the women at the BAFTAs, although extremely glamorous, were well covered up, showing a fairly small amount of skin, and looked incredibly elegant.

This morning, I switched my computer on and went to all of the usual sites and news feeds that I look at, and obviously the main topic on a lot of them was the Grammy Awards (and something about Aguilera falling over? Career suicide, after Super Bowl Sunday/Star Spangled Banner-gate, I would have thought) The contrast in what the women wore to the Grammys was actually quite startling.

Here’s some examples:

Eva Green vs. Nicki Minaj

European Elegance vs. Er, Sorry, Who the Fuck is Nicki Minaj?

Emma Watson vs. Snooki

Grace and Style vs. Got Headbutted in a Club.

And finally, Thandie Newton vs. Lady Gaga

Thandie arrived in Monique Lhuillier. Lady Gaga arrived in an EGG.

Finally, I think I could have summed up the contrast by showing you just two pictures. By comparing arguably the most important and prestigious award at each ceremony, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the BAFTA Academy Fellowship.

Sir Christopher Lee, Famous for Count Dracula, Count Dooku and Saruman. Dolly Parton, Famous for....Tits and Pink.

Nuff said.

N0t a fan of Dolly Parton… but, my mother in law is… and she dragged us to Dollywood, USA. It’s a massive theme park in TN. I’m also not a fan of theme parks (disney excluded of course) , but this one was okay. Here is what I learned… Dolly Parton came from an amazingly poor background, like dirt poor. Multiple kids, no food, no income kind-of-poor. After she made her money, she built the theme park back by her home town in order to bring jobs to the community. All in all it was a pretty interesting history.

Not to be snarky, but she is looking quite old in that pic…

Ah, Dolly. See, the thing is, I don’t dislike Dolly Parton, as you say she seems like a really good person, and there are a couple of her songs that I love. But her image is just a bit…over the top. I know she wouldn’t be Dolly if she wasn’t all tits and pink, and at least she has some talent I guess, it’s just a bit of an olfactory overload if you have to see her at the same time as hearing her!

Tits and pink. I love it. You’re completely right. What seems to have been lacking was a sense of decorum.

The worrying thing is, Husband said “Tits and pink? That reminds me of you!” He meant it in a nice way though…I hope!

Catching up on some of your posts I’ve missed:

*gasp* Dissing Queen Dolly of Dollywood? Noooo!

It’s amazing how she looks now compared to how she looked at the start of her career. She was such a natural beauty. The lure of the D-cup…. meh

To be fair though you need to compare Grammy with Brits/Mercury and Baftas with Oscars as pop musicians are always totally OTT compared to actors. Oh, unless you are dealing with the British soap awards. I get your point though and there really is no need for this after-the-fact pedantry is there? I’ll go now…. la la la ;) xXx
