I have a confession to make.

*whispers*
I’m a bit of a control freak.
*SHHH!*

I know, who’d have thunk it, eh?!

But it’s true. When there are tasks to be completed which I feel like I and only I should be doing, I find it really hard to relinquish control. Like getting Sausage to sleep at night. The first time she fell asleep with Daddy, I felt all kinds of left out. But Daddy has a right to the good cuddles too, so I have to man-up and take it.

My control freak nature also means that I find it hard to relax and take time for myself (I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m not superwoman, but when you have a 2 and a half your old, even when you’re sitting watching telly, you still have to be on, don’t you?). But sometimes, Husband will put his foot down and insist that I do something for myself. Often, that will be taking the time to finish a blog post, or just to take a shower. I mean the good kind of shower.

No, get your minds out of the gutter, I just mean the kind of shower where you have time to just stand under the water for as long as you want, and wash your hair and shave your legs and sing a few verses of ‘Love Letters’ by Alison Moyet. Then, when you get out, you actually get 5 minutes to think about what you’ll wear, rather than just slinging on the first pair of knickers (you know, the ones that may have lost a bit of elastic, and maybe should have been thrown away, but you just haven’t got round to it yet), and then you dry your hair, with an actual hairdryer, and if you’re really lucky, you get to run the straighteners through it, and if you’re REALLY lucky, you get to put on some mascara and a squirt of perfume.

And it may not sound like a lot, but boy does it make me feel human again when I get to have one of those showers. And when I feel more human, it has a knock on effect for my family as I’ll inevitably function a little better, even if it it’s just 10% more productivity, it makes a difference.

So I’m glad I have Husband to remind me to take some time for myself. Because I’d undoubtably forget to do it if it were down to me, I’d carry on with my “Take roughly 30 seconds in the shower, don’t bother to use conditioner as it takes too long, jump out, get dressed whilst still half wet, stick hair in  ponytail and don’t even think about make-up, these knickers will just have to do” routine. Which is the difference between this:

and this:

And I think we can all agree which one we’d rather meet in a dark alley!

It is tough though, isn’t it? To be honest, i feel a bit weird just laying in a bath or something when I feel that I should be looking after everyone, but I’ll just have to force myself to get used to it!
