We Are the Day Trippers – Suggestions Please!

So, remember I told you HERE that we were saving up for a car? Well, we’ve had some amazing luck recently, my Uncle is being made redundant, hooray! No, wait that came out wrong! What I mean is, my Uncle is being made redundant and he’s using his redundancy money to buy a brand spanking new car, leaving his perfectly good but old car going spare, and he’s giving it to us, yippee! (It came out better that time, right?!) Off to Tesco I go to search for car insurance, it’s always my first stop when I’m searching for a good quote.

I’m seriously looking forward to all of the places we can take Sausage once we have our car. Obviously we have the main London museums on our list, along with the National Aquarium on the south coast, as well as Peppa Pig Land and the New Forest. Husband and I also love a bit of history so we’d like to take in some of the historical landmarks that the UK has to offer as well as a stately home or twelve! Plus there’s all of the lovely coastal walks that we can enjoy with Chuck and maybe even a bit of camping in the summer.

At the moment, Sausage’s nursery take a ‘learning through play’ approach, which I like to an extent, but she’s a really bright kid, so Husband and I want to kick her learning up a notch and hope that day trips to fun and educational places will really get things going. If any of you have any suggestions of where we can take her (preferably within a 100 mile radius of Essex) I’d love to hear them.

The UK really is a great place in terms of countryside and what we have to offer. I know it’s easy to get bogged down in the negatives or overlook your home country in favour searching the world, but I can’t wait to see more of our fair land and discover some new places…but not before I get my car insurance sorted!

Ellos – Shoppers Paradise!

A little while ago, I did a Silent Sunday post featuring a pair of sparkly shoes. What I failed to mention (what with it being Silent Sunday, and all…) was that I got these shoes from Ellos.

In case you haven’t heard of them, Ellos are an online catalogue that sells clothes for women, men and kids and the have some absolutely gorgeous items (sparkly shoes = case in point!). They were kind enough to let me have £50 to spend, which covered the cost of the shoes and they even threw in a gorgeous pair of mittens and matching leg warmers . They came in very handy over the past few weeks, I can tell you, though not worn with the shoes…that would just be silly!

I highly recommend having a look at what Ellos have to offer, the clothing for women is lovely, but there’s loads of stuff on the kids section that I want for Sausage too. The delivery was speedy and their customer service was totally brilliant.

A big Mum’s the Word thumbs-up for Ellos!

Tesco Compare Car Insurance

It may surprise you to know, given that I sometimes seem  rather…scattered…that I can actually drive. I passed my test FIRST TIME when I was just 18 and my first car was a little metallic red Fiat Cinquecento who I called Ruby. I loved that car, she was £795 and 7 years old when I bought her and I paid another £700 to be insured on her on a provisional licence, which back then was megabucks to me!

I’ve had various cars over the years and I adore driving, but we haven’t actually had a car at all for the past two years after our last one gave up the ghost. We recently saved up some money and are looking to buy a little second hand motor, choosing to opt for a Mercedes A-Class for the safety and quality build that those Germans always seem to offer. Then comes the issue of car insurance. I spent a while looking into how much our insurance would cost and found the process so laborious, going from one site to the next and entering all of my details.

Then I remembered all of those TV adverts about websites that compare car insurance and because they’re such a well-known family brand, I opted to use the Tesco Compare website. Any time I shop for car insurance, Tesco Insurance tends to come out as the cheapest, even in comparison to all of those ‘women driver’ insurers, but with their comparing service you can compare quotes from all of the major insurance providers at the same time.

It’s a completely free service and there’s no obligation to buy anything, but for a busy working Mum, the time I saved by using Tesco Compare was invaluable to me and my family. Once we’ve purchased our new car, which will probably be after Christmas, I’ll definitely be using Tesco Compare to find the cheapest quote I can and let’s face it, aren’t we all looking to save a bit of money after the expensive Christmas period?

All I will say is this, even if you’ve been with your insurer for a while, it can’t hurt to get a new quote just to make sure you’re saving as much money as you possibly can and Tesco Compare will make the process as quick and painless as it can possibly be!

The Fairy Hobmother

Well it’s finally happened. After months of my commenting on blogs and general self-promotion on Twitter, the Fairy Hobmother has landed at Mum’s the Word. For those of you who aren’t in the know, the Fairy Hobmother waves his magic wand (or is it a handheld blender?) and the lovely chaps at Appliances Online, who sell some rather ace washing machines, bestow us with a lovely little gift, (in my case it was a £15 Amazon voucher…that’s Hubs’ birthday present sorted then…;-)) and then extend that to our lovely readers. What that means is, anyone who comments on this post could be in with a chance of getting their very own Hobmother visit. Tantalising, isn’t it?

Judging by the banging noise that my washing machine decided to make mid-spin yesterday, I’m thinking I might be making my very own personal visit to Appliances Online very soon. I also love the fact that they do a free recycling service where they take your old machine away and dispose of it properly. I don’t know about you, but our council charge through the bloody nose for that service.

Anyway, comment below and Ian could be waving his wand over you very soon! (That sounded dirty, didn’t it? I didn’t mean it to, honestly!)

Intel Museum of Me

A few weeks ago, Husband called me into the office to show me something on his computer, and I walked in to see a load of our photos playing as though they were in their very own art gallery. I must confess, I did get a lump in my throat as it went through our wedding photos, Sausage’s baby photos and a load of others which meant a lot to us.

What I was looking at was the Intel Museum of Me, a visual archive of Husbands social life, where a simple click of a button arranges your photos, friends and updates and turns them into a kind of ‘This is Your Life’ through social media. It’s three minutes of sentimentality, and that’s got me written all over it! To get your own Museum of me, just go to the Intel site and connect with your Facebook page. Give it a go, it’s well worth it.

Loved By Parents Awards

As most of you will know from my blog header, tweets, Facebook updates, blog posts, sidebar adverts…..I was sponsored by tummy tub to attend CyberMummy 11. I was particularly pleased about this because it’s a brand I really believe in. We had a tummy tub for Sausage and used it from birth and it’s probably the only ‘gadgety’ type thing that we had. I’d recommend it wholeheartedly. The benefits are SO numerous;

  • The shape of the tummy tub emulates the feeling of being inside the mother’s womb, and can soothe babies.
  • It’s been proven to help with colic.
  • Because of its clever shape, it only uses a tiny amount of water, which means you save money on water bills and heating water.
  • Because it only uses a small amount of water, it’s easy to carry around when the water is in it, which means you can bathe your baby in a warm bedroom, rather than a cold bathroom, if you wish.
  • Again, because of its low fill level, I was able to carry the tummy tub around after my c-section with no trouble at all.
  • You only need one hand to hold small babies with, because the sides of the bath are so supportive, which means you  have a hand free for washing, splashing and rubber-duck puppetry!

I’m sure there are lots of other (more scientific) benefits, but I won’t list them all here. You can go to the tummy tub site to read more, or to the Baby Allsorts site to purchase one.

The reason I’m posting is because someone else must have realised the numerous virtues of the tummy tub, not once but twice, as the tummy tub has been shortlisted for TWO Loved By Parents awards, Best Innovative Idea and Best Baby Bath.

This is incredible news and as the next stage is about voting, you can help too! The polls open in a couple of days, and I know tummy tub would be so stoked if you voted for them. You can go to the Loved By Parents website from 8th July to vote for all of your favourite things *coughTUMMYTUBcough* and to see all of the other products and categories that are in the final. In the meantime, tummy tub can also be found on Twitter and Facebook, so get your asses over there to follow and like, and you’ll be able to keep up with their progress in the awards, see all of the exciting new products that they’ll soon be launching, and see some seriously cute pictures of babies in their tubs!

“Bread feeds the body, indeed, but flowers feed also the soul.”

I’ve mentioned before on my blog about how Husband often surprises me with flowers, and that sometimes there’s nothing nicer than opening the door to a stranger with a bouquet, knowing that Husband has been thinking about me and secretly planning something so lovely, just to make me smile. Most women hate it when their Husbands sneak around. I love it when mine does!

Since becoming a Mum, I can honestly say that every year, without fail, I forget that I’ll be getting something on Mothers’ Day. I know, it sounds weird, I am a mother, but I suppose I’ve spend so many more years being the daughter than being the mother and old habits are hard to break. So when I do get something from Sausage, it’s always a lovely surprise as I’m never expecting it.

This year, Flowers Direct have a stunning range of Mothers’ Day bouquets, including ‘Celebrate Mum’ (From £29.99), which is full of pink Chrysanthemums, Carnations, Germini, Oriental Lilies and Alstomeria, and comes with a free box of chocolates. I don’t know many Mums who wouldn’t love one of these!

For those of you with a slightly smaller budget, there’s the pretty ‘Azalea Basket’ (From £12.74), a beautiful plant in soft pinks, just perfect for showing your Mum that you think she’s the best.

If you really want to push the boat out, there’s the gorgeous ‘Rose and Lily Bouquet’ (From £34.99) which contains ‘A beautifully abundant selection of traditional pink Roses and Lilies complemented by delicate foliage’. This bunch of beauties would be enough to make any Mum feel like a queen.

All of these bouquets, along with many others, are still available for delivery in time for Mothers’ Day, for just £5.99 delivery, which is cheaper than Interflora! If you want to make your Mum’s day, you know what to do.

A Little Bit of Me Time.

Thanks to Crystal Light for sponsoring this post. To learn more about how Crystal Light can flavor your day with 30 refreshing flavors, visit http://www.facebook.com/crystallight.

I have a confession to make.

*whispers*
I’m a bit of a control freak.
*SHHH!*

I know, who’d have thunk it, eh?!

But it’s true. When there are tasks to be completed which I feel like I and only I should be doing, I find it really hard to relinquish control. Like getting Sausage to sleep at night. The first time she fell asleep with Daddy, I felt all kinds of left out. But Daddy has a right to the good cuddles too, so I have to man-up and take it.

My control freak nature also means that I find it hard to relax and take time for myself (I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m not superwoman, but when you have a 2 and a half your old, even when you’re sitting watching telly, you still have to be on, don’t you?). But sometimes, Husband will put his foot down and insist that I do something for myself. Often, that will be taking the time to finish a blog post, or just to take a shower. I mean the good kind of shower.

No, get your minds out of the gutter, I just mean the kind of shower where you have time to just stand under the water for as long as you want, and wash your hair and shave your legs and sing a few verses of ‘Love Letters’ by Alison Moyet. Then, when you get out, you actually get 5 minutes to think about what you’ll wear, rather than just slinging on the first pair of knickers (you know, the ones that may have lost a bit of elastic, and maybe should have been thrown away, but you just haven’t got round to it yet), and then you dry your hair, with an actual hairdryer, and if you’re really lucky, you get to run the straighteners through it, and if you’re REALLY lucky, you get to put on some mascara and a squirt of perfume.

And it may not sound like a lot, but boy does it make me feel human again when I get to have one of those showers. And when I feel more human, it has a knock on effect for my family as I’ll inevitably function a little better, even if it it’s just 10% more productivity, it makes a difference.

So I’m glad I have Husband to remind me to take some time for myself. Because I’d undoubtably forget to do it if it were down to me, I’d carry on with my “Take roughly 30 seconds in the shower, don’t bother to use conditioner as it takes too long, jump out, get dressed whilst still half wet, stick hair in  ponytail and don’t even think about make-up, these knickers will just have to do” routine. Which is the difference between this:

and this:

And I think we can all agree which one we’d rather meet in a dark alley!

Parenting is Scary.

When I was pregnant, I was all too aware of the things that could go wrong, and obsessed over every minute detail, avoiding caffeine, pâté, sushi etc. I even heard that potatoes that had gone green could contribute to spina bifida, and seeing as how we already had that in our family, I inspected every spud before I ate it too. One particular concern for me is that I have a couple of conditions, asthma and a latex allergy, which we were told could contribute to Sausage also developing eczema and allergies, the most concerning of which was a peanut allergy.

As I’m sure most of you will have gathered by now, Husband and I are particularly paranoid parents, which means that we tend to be over-cautious about almost everything. When it came to testing Sausage out on peanut butter, we took a particularly scientific approach to it, rubbing a little on her skin and leaving it for 24 hours to see if there was any redness, then we rubbed a little on the inside of her lip to see if any swelling occurred. Only when we were satisfied that there was no reaction did we let her try to actually eat the peanut butter (only for her to declare she didn’t like it….!).

All I know is, being a parent is scary enough, but having a child with an allergy must be absolutely nerve-wracking. Having to think about everything that touches their lips, in terms of nutrition, boggles my tiny mind…I can’t even fathom how hard it must be when a mouthful of a particular food or drink could be fatal. That’s why, when the good folk at Easy2Name asked me to talk about one of their products, i didn’t hesitate.

Their Allergy Labels are perfect if you have a nursery or school age child, as it means that you can label every drinks cup, lunch box or milk bottle with a personalised sticker, alerting their carer as to what they need to avoid. The stickers come in a range of styles, including ‘No Dairy’, ‘No Nuts’ and ‘No Gluten’, and also allow for two lines of text, for personalization, or custom messages. I know that most nurseries, schools and childminders are great with this kind of thing, and will always have a medical history for each child, but a little extra reminder may be the difference between a stressed out parent and a bit of peace of mind. Heck, it might be the difference between a well child, and a very poorly kid indeed.

At £17.95 for 40 custom labels, which are dishwasher, microwave and steriliser proof, these handy little labels seem like a really cheap, really effective solution to something that could otherwise be a really big problem. And for a short time, if you type in FACEBOOK10 at the checkout, you’ll receive a 10% discount.
